Free and cheap school supplies

ATLANTA -- This is the best time of year to buy both school supplies and office supplies.  Some things are as low as a penny, or even free after rebates!

I set out to find the best deals on a typical kindergarten or first grade supply list from Atlanta Public Schools.

I found the most convenient way to buy supplies is to order them through SchoolPak.com. The company will ship a box of required supplies to your home or school. The first grade list came to $55.34 including shipping.

I set out to see if I could find better deals in the stores. First our summer intern Katie and I went through the weekly sale flyers in search of the lowest possible prices for every item on our list.

Should Georgia Mom Serve Jail Time In 4-Year-Old Son’s Jaywalking Death?

Should Georgia Mom Serve Jail Time In 4-Year-Old Son’s Jaywalking Death?

It saddens me to read about the death of anyone but when it is a child it absolutely breaks my heart. So when I read about the Marietta, GA mom – Raquel Nelson – who will be facing sentencing tomorrow over the death of her 4-year-old son – A.J. - in a jaywalking accident (see complete story here), I was completely overtaken with emotion. Quite honestly, I sit here typing with tears in my eyes because it is unfathomable to me this loss that this woman and her family have had to deal with.  And what troubles me more  is that she may face up to three years in prison for a horribly tragic mistake. What, you may ask, is the reason this mom may serve time?

Former APS insider gets tough on business leaders

ATLANTA -- Former Atlanta Public Schools Board Member Aaron Watson, who now serves on the Atlanta City Council, had tough words for the business community in analyzing what led to the public schools cheating scandal.

COMPLETE COVERAGE: CRCT Cheating Investigation

"There were a number of members of the business community who accepted what Beverly said without any accountability," Watson said during an interview with 11Alive News.

Watson served eight years on the board, starting in 1993. He was chairman of the board for five years.

Watson was on the board that hired former superintendent Dr. Beverly Hall in 1999. She came in with great fanfare.

"Did you see any early signs of trouble with Dr. Hall?" asked 11Alive's Jennifer Leslie.

Beverly Hall's compensation eclipsed other area superintendents

ATLANTA -- Beverly Hall may no longer be Superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools, but in light of the cheating scandal she's been in the news more than ever, which is why 11Alive's Center for Investigative Action took a closer look at her, and the perks she received while she was in control.

When we compared her compensation of $415,293 in 2010 to the other larger school districts in the area, we got a clear picture of just how she well she scored financially.

When you break it down per student, Hall was paid 3.5 times more than Gwinnett County's School Superintendent who runs a district with 3 times as many students.

Parking Problem Near Hospital is Making Drivers Sick

Several months ago, 11Alive viewer Sarah Ortiz received a parking citation for "No Rush Hour Parking" in front of Emory University Hospital Midtown on Peachtree Street. But there was a problem. The meter instructed her to read and follow the restriction signs. But there weren't any signs that said she couldn't park. So, she contacted Team Commuter Dude to resolve the confusing issue.
