WESTSIDE: Facebook to open Atlanta office

WESTSIDE: Facebook to open Atlanta office

ATLANTA -- Social networking behemoth Facebook is expanding in Atlanta.

The Palo Alto-based company is opening a 5,045 square office in West Midtown, according to a building permit filed with the City of Atlanta.

Facebook has an existing office in Atlanta, which according to the company's website is "one of the fastest growing offices in the East Region."

The new office will be located in Brickworks Atlanta, a mixed-use development at Marietta and Howell Mill. The development is anchored by 5 Seasons Brewing restaurant.

The Facebook office renovation will cost about $20,750. An office of that size would typically house about 25 employees.

Facebook's decision to plant employees in West Midtown makes sense. The once gritty neighborhood is gentrifying and is near Georgia Tech, a fount of engineering and programming talent.

ADOPT A PET: Meet Ming

ADOPT A PET: Meet Ming

ATLANTA - If you dream of coming home to a wet nose, wagging tail and tons of kisses (in addition to, perhaps, a half-chewed shoe or an overturned trashcan) adopt a puppy from your local Humane Society. According to the ASPCA, approximately 5 million to 7 million domesticated animals enter animal shelters nationwide, every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized. However, you can change those numbers by adopting a "companion" for yourself or for your family. Pets are an investment but, in our opinion, an investment well worth the money.

Ming is a one year old female Hound and Shepard mix and she's available for adoption from the Atlanta Humane Society. Ming came to the Humane Society because her owner couldn’t take care of her, anymore. She is a very active puppy and needs a lot of outdoor play. The Humane Society hopes she finds a home where she can learn new things while being spoiled.

Tech professor killed in Fla. bike wreck

ATLANTA -- A Georgia Tech assistant professor was killed while biking on the Florida panhandle Saturday.

The Florida Highway Patrol told NBC affiliate WJHG 33-year-old Dr. Kurt Frankel was riding his bike in the bike lane on Highway 98 at around 8:30 Saturday morning.

According to WJHG, 19-year-old Alexandra Alford of Miramar Beach was driving within the outside lane but somehow hit Frankel on his bike from behind.

Frankel was thrown from his bike and taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in South Walton County but did not survive his injuries. Authorities say he was wearing a helmet. No charges have been filed so far.

Dr. Frankel worked out of Georgia Tech's School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. Heavily published, he was an expert on plate tectonics and geomorphology. He taught a number of courses on the foundations of the earth's structure, and how the changing nature of the earth affected the world around us.

Volunteers create Peachtree training oasis

ATLANTA -- Every weekend in the month leading up to the AJC Peachtree Road Race, volunteers with the Atlanta Track Club set up an oasis.

"It's your pre-Peachtree water stop," said volunteer crew chief Kristy Gillmann. "Two weeks ago, we had 400 people."

For training runs, it's the only official water stop on the course. Gillman sets up on the sidewalk on Peachtree Road north of Piedmont Hospital.

"We're right in the middle of the race, right before the big hill everyone talks about," she said.

At the end of the course, work on the finish line began in earnest early Saturday.

Part of 10th Street near Grady High School was blocked off at 9:30 a.m. It will remain off-limits until after the race.
