GDOT: "Peachtree Runners Watch Your Step."

Participants are being warned to watch their step for this year's AJC Peachtree Road Race.

Part of the course is an active construction site.

A lot of work has been done in recent days to prepare it, but there are spots that will be un-even and participants should use extra caution.

In just a few days, the vehicle traffic in Buckhead will make way for the human variety.  But as late as Thursday, when our Commuter Dude, John Gerard, went out for an inspection with the course director, the starting line of The Peachtree was still a clutter of construction.

O4W: Ponce City Market to reshape City Hall East

ATLANTA --   For more than a year, it's been the largest vacant building in town -- a ten story brick behemoth with ideas and speculation almost equal to its massive volume.

Originally a Sears distribution center, then an oversized City Hall annex, it is now tentatively in the hands of a development company that wants to call it Ponce City Market -- with a $180 million fixup.

6.2 Miles, 24 Pounds, LIVE TV

ATLANTA--This 4th of July in the mass of 60,000 Peachtree runners, you'll see 11Alive's Julie Wolfe and Doug Richards. Both are runners, but this time they've been tasked with something extra: carry a 24 pound pack and camera.

The pack contains technology called TVU. It uses seven different cell phone cards to various providers. Together, they provide a solid (though not perfect) live image.

Doug and Julie will take turns carrying the pack as they complete the 2011 AJC Peachtree Road Race. It will provide a unique element to 11Alive's coverage... if they can carry it off. The two ran a test earlier this week on four miles of the course. This is that test.

People urged not to shop, work to protest Ga. law

ATLANTA (AP) -- As many parts of Georgia's law cracking down on illegal immigration take effect, a Latino community group is organizing "a day without immigrants" to protest the measure.

The Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights is calling for a day of non-compliance, asking businesses to close and community members to stay home and not work or shop Friday.

Alan Conner, owner of Dakota Blue restaurant in Grant Park, said he thinks the law is unjust and planned to close for lunch Friday in solidarity.

But some urge caution. Jerry Gonzalez, executive director of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials, says skipping work without authorization could cost people jobs in a tough economic climate.

Groups are also organizing a "march for justice" on Saturday at the state Capitol to protest the law.

Condition of the Peachtree race course

ATLANTA -- More than 60,000 people will hit the streets of Atlanta Monday morning for the AJC Peachtree Road Race.

The event should be fun, exciting and competitive, but organizers also want it to be safe.

With so much construction taking place around the City, especially in Buckhead, is the course ready for so many racers?

11Alive's Commuter Dude drove along with the course director to find out.
