Springmont Students get close look at Georgia history

Springmont  Elementary school students visited the Governor's Mansion as part of the school's "Going Out" program. This program supplemented classroom history lessons with an on-site visit to learn more about the Governor's Mansion, which is one of Georgia's historical treasures.

Constructed in 1967 and located in Buckhead, the Governor's Mansion is a 30-room Greek Revival structure. Rooms on the first floor are used for official entertaining. The second floor contains the Deal's private living quarters.

Located at 5750 Long Island Drive in Sandy Springs, Springmont School serves the needs of students ages 18 months to 14 years. For more information on the school, go to www.springmont.com.

Fulton County Cooperative Extension participates in Pizza Farm 2013

How do you expose urban youth to Georgia’s agriculture? You open a Pizza Farm!

The Cooperative Extension Metro Collaborative of Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Cobb and Clayton counties have invited 4th and 5th grade students to visit Pizza Farm 2013 on May 8 and 9, 2013 at the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall located in Forest Park, GA. Attendees will learn how dairy, vegetables, grains and meats come together to make the perfect pizza, as well as about good health and nutrition.

“We are excited about the Pizza Farm!” states Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension. “Many children think their food comes from the grocery store.  The Pizza Farm will teach them that every pizza starts at the farm.”

Exhibits on the origins of pizza ingredients will be presented in a circuit of stations set up around the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall.

Falling oak stops traffic and knocks out power in Midtown

ATLANTA -- A large oak tree crashed into the intersection of Juniper Street and 5th Street in Midtown Atlanta overnight, blocking traffic and knocking out power to about 50-customers.

PHOTOS | Heavy rain on Cinco de Mayo weekend

It was about 11PM, when the 40-foot oak was uprooted on the property of The Fifth Ivory, a restaurant and piano bar. The tree plunged into the intersection, but was miraculously suspended by the traffic signal wires.

But the tree's enormous weight tugged at the wires and snapped a nearby utility pole, sending 5th Street between Peachtree Street and Piedmont Ave, into darkness

Commuter Dude was live at the location all morning long and files this report, just before power was restored.

Georgia Tech Softball downs Boston College, 12-3, for series sweep

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Georgia Tech softball team (25-29, 10-10 ACC) pounded 14 hits for 12 runs in a 12-3 victory to complete the series sweep over Boston College (14-37, 2-19) Sunday afternoon at Shea Softball Field in both teams' regular season finale.

Georgia Tech's Ashley Thomas went 2-for-4 with three runs, while Alysha Rudnik was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI to lead the team. Katie Johnsky added four RBI and a two-run homer, and Courtney Ziese was 2-for-4 with a home run.

"It was really important to get the sweep," head coach Sharon Perkins said. "It's one of those things where you play hard one game at a time and we did just that. Kylie [Kleinschmidt] threw really well and Karly [Fullem] closed the game for us, but our bats were alive the whole day."

Palka homers twice, but No. 23 Jackets fall to Coastal

THE FLATS -- Junior Daniel Palka launched a pair of home runs, drove in four and pitched an inning of scoreless relief, but No. 23 Georgia Tech let a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning slip away as Coastal Carolina rallied for a 12-8 victory to win the weekend series Sunday at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Chanticleers (29-18) sprinted out to a quick 5-0 lead in the third, the Yellow Jackets (29-18) answered with a five-spot in the bottom of the third, then seized a one-run lead in the fourth that they would take to the seventh. But the visitors pushed across seven in the seventh to reclaim the lead for good.
