Fulton Co. to “Unleash the Power of Age” as Older Americans Month begins

Fulton Co. to “Unleash the Power of Age” as Older Americans Month begins

One senior volunteer to be honored for serving 2,500 hours of service

Fulton County kicked off Older Americans month Wednesday, May 1, 2013, along with the rest of the nation to celebrate the value of older Americans. Fulton County Commissioners issued a proclamation that recognized seniors for their value as continuing economic and social contributors to society.

Every year since 1963, May has been a month to appreciate and celebrate the vitality and aspirations of older adults and their contributions to our communities. The theme for Older Americans Month 2013, Unleash the Power of Age, has never been more fitting. Older Americans are productive, active, and influential members of society, sharing essential talents, wisdom, and life experience with their families, friends, and neighbors.

APS students lead with 2013 Gates Millennium Scholarship winners

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Public Schools had more winners of the 2013 Gates Millennium Scholarship that any other district in the state of Georgia.

As spokesman for APS Stephen Alford reported, 14 APS high school students have taken the award. The Gates Millennium Scholarship, Alford said, is given to 1,000 students across the country. Winners can use the scholarship toward attendance at their choice college or university.

Along with the funds, students receive personal and professional development through various Gates Leadership programs.

"At a time when the perception of our academic programs have suffered, it is reassuring to see our students compete and achieve some of the most prestigious academic awards offered to high school students," Superintendent of APS Erroll Davis, Jr. said.

Seniors to learn how to guard against scams

COLLEGE PARK, GA. -- Fulton County is hosting another information session that teaches seniors how to protect themselves against scams.

The one-hour program on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, will be held at Camp Truitt from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.  Camp Truitt is located at 4320 Hershel Road in College Park and is sponsored by the Housing and Human Services Department, Office of Housing and Community Development.

Scams that often target seniors include but are not limited to telemarketing, reverse mortgages, healthcare/health insurance, home and auto repair.  This session will provide information to help seniors to identify, prevent and report fraudulent and deceptive schemes.  The best strategy to prevent scams is for citizens to be informed.

Commuter Dude surprises unsuspecting homeowner with May Day Basket

ATLANTA -- May Day is historically celebrated as a day to recognize the working class. One of its longstanding, yet little known traditions, is to leave a gift basket on the doorstep of a person you don't know.

That sounded like all kinds of fun to 11Alive's Commuter Dude, who may have taken the element of surprise, in his gift basket presentation, to a whole new level.
