Dazzling Designs: SCAD Seen Gala | Arts & Culture
The 5th annual SCAD Seen Gala was held on the evening of May 23 at the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Atlanta campus.
The evening featured a silent fine art auction of original work curated by Fay Gold as well as a fashion showcase of SCAD student designers. Students presented their designs in an intimate setting, allowing guests an opportunity to engage with the designers and their collections.
Best known for designing Michelle Obama's presidential inauguration dress, Isabel Toledo and her husband, world-renowned artist Ruben Toledo were the honorary chairs of the event. The couple signed and sold copies of their new book, "Roots of Style: Weaving Together Life, Love, and Fashion." SCAD presented the pair with an André Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award at the university's annual fashion show in 2009.
The biggest buzz at the event was that André Leon Talley himself made a special appearance. The larger than life figure, glided into the event wearing his signature oversized cape. The fashion icon and former American editor-at-large for Vogue magazine is a member of the Board of Trustees at SCAD.
Co-chairs of the gala included John D. Oetgen, John H. Lineweaver, and Ginny and Charles Brewer. Other special guests included Stephen Burrows and Raul Melgoza, this year's SCAD Style Lab mentors who worked from conception to construction to styling on the senior collections of select SCAD Atlanta fashion students.
Attendees at the gala were made up of Atlanta’s tastemakers in the world of art and design as well as editors from the city’s top media outlets.
All proceeds from the evening will go to the university's scholarship fund which provides assistance for talented students with financial need.
