Phylicia Rashad honored by SCAD

ATLANTA -- The Savannah College of Art and Design is honoring veteran performer Phylicia Rashad at its inaugural television festival in Atlanta.

The school is hosting a three-day program titled "aTVfest" at the SCAD Atlanta campus in Midtown and at other locations throughout the neighborhood Feb. 14 through 16.

Rashad is being honored with the Outstanding Achievement in Television Award and will be presented with it Feb. 16.

Rashad is perhaps most widely known for her role as Claire Huxtable on "The Cosby Show" and has received numerous honors for her career in television, film and on Broadway, which has included roles in "A Raisin in the Sun," "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "For Colored Girls," among other productions.

Local artist, 11, pays tribute to Obama as country celebrates inauguration

Today, Barack Obama is sworn in as the nation’s 44th president. And throughout the country, citizens ready for a new administration as the country faces a continuing economic crisis, impassioned conversations and more.

In Atlanta, one young artist encourages people to focus on the positive. Yung Mieo, a budding hip-hop/pop phenom, recognizes President Obama in his song “Hero” and pays tribute to the leader’s influence in his life.

“Hero” uses inspirational imagery in its music video, showcasing Obama on the campaign trail, speaking on the country’s future and mobilizing the nation. Through his lyrics, Yung Mieo assures listeners that he will stand up for them and be their voice when they encounter struggles, as he feels Obama has done for him.

Vilde Frang to make Atlanta debut

Vilde Frang to make Atlanta debut

ATLANTA -- Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang will make her Atlanta Symphony Orchestra debut later this month.

The 25-year-old virtuoso will perform the Korngold Violin Concerto at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 2.

Other pieces in Frang's program include Edvard Grieg's "Two Elegiac Melodies" and Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 3. Gilbert Varga will conduct.

Lilburn Art Alliance to hold first art exhibition

LILBURN, Ga. -- The Lilburn Art Alliance recently began in Gwinnett County, to spread the word of public arts projects throughout the community. 

Nikki Young, Public Relations Manager for the City of Lilburn said that the group creates works of public art, supports local artists and creates studio space in Old Town Lilburn. 

In carrying out their mission, they will hold the first art exhibition of Saturday, January 12 from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. It will be located at 107 Main Street, where Sprig restaurant will provide small bites and wine. Music on Main will provide entertainment, according to Young. 

Some of the local artists who will display their work are Susan Boudreaux, Diana Dice, Teri Enfield, Alan Harp, Gwendolyn McDonald, David Raderstorf and Peggy Sullens.
