Kroger closing Brookwood location in July

ATLANTA -- Kroger is closing its Brookwood location.

The grocery store chain will close the store at 1745 Peachtree St. on July 8.

"This decision was made only after extensive and careful review, and it is a necessary step toward making Kroger more competitive in the Atlanta market," the company said in a statement.

The nearly 36,000-square-foot Brookwood store, which has two levels, had "experienced declining sales and negative profit over an extended period of time, and its closing will help Kroger operate more efficiently," the company said.

Store employees will be considered for reassignment to other Kroger locations. Cincinnati-based Kroger Co. has 130 stores in metro Atlanta.

The space is not expected to be vacant long.

Eweniversally Green helps Atlantans get rid of baaaad plants

ATLANTA -- The kudzu on the hill outside 11Alive's Midtown studio is overgrown and out of control -- the perfect meal for Atlanta's only flock of problem plant-eating sheep.

Brian Cash is the shepherd and owner of Eweniversally Green, a service that uses sheep and goats to clear vegetation. The "Woolies" are more than happy to eat away the kudzu, poison ivy and weeds from yards and businesses.

"I am the only person in the city of Atlanta that does this," Cash said. "So I'm the only one that has a mobile flock of sheep that gets rented out for this use."

Dunwoody resident Kevin Brown first heard of sheep being used to control vegetation and prevent wildfires in California.

MIDTOWN: Symphony facing artistic, financial challenges

ATLANTA -- Tough economic times and changing priorities are signaling new directions for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, now in its 66th year and the 10th anniversary for its Musical Director, Robert Spano.

The Atlanta Symphony is one of the nation's greatest orchestras. They are now facing challenges in a new world dominated by social media and economic downturns.

For the orchestra it's a matter of establishing financial stability and taking its music beyond Symphony Hall. And for Stanley Romanstein, Atlanta Symphony President, that means trimming a $2.5 million deficit on a $47 million budget in two years.

It won't be easy.

"We are not a very generous community when it comes to contributions to the support arts and culture. We like having a community rich in the arts, but if you look statistically we not very generous when it comes to supporting artistic institutions," Romanstein said.
