FMSA Invites Community to Contribute to Shoe Drive | Community Spirit
October is a great month to clean out your closet as you prepare for cooler weather. If you've been tossing your shoes on the floor because you're running out of shelf space, why not donate a few pairs to the Soles4Souls shoe drive? First Montessori School of Atlanta, located at 5750 Long Island Drive in Sandy Springs, has drop boxes available around the campus through Monday, Oct. 31, to accept donations from the community.
Soles4Souls is a non-profit organization that collects and distributes shoes to over 125 countries. The group has donated 16 million pairs of shoes to those in need.
Your gift of footwear is important to children and adults around the world. Footwear can help eliminate the spreading of diseases through the foot as well as help children obtain an education since many schools have footwear requirements to attend.
First Montessori School of Atlanta is accepting donations of new or gently used shoes of all types and sizes. Make sure each pair is bound together with a rubber band or by the shoelaces.
It's estimated that the average American man owns 12 pairs of shoes. Women own more than double that of men, with 27 pairs on average.
"Our students are excited to work on this community service project," said Jerri King, Head of School at First Montessori School of Atlanta. "Global awareness is one of our core values. We want our students to see beyond themselves and strive to lead socially useful and purposeful lives."
King added, "By taking time to recycle your footwear, you are, in fact, changing lives both domestically and internationally."
