High School Siemens Competition at Georgia Tech, November 12th-13th

There’s $9,000 up for grabs in Midtown, this weekend, and someone’s leaving town with it.

The Regional Finalists in the 2010-11 Siemens Competition arrive at the Georgia Institute of Technology November 12-13. Up for grabs is a $3,000 prize for an individual, $6,000 for a team and the chance to win up to $100K at the National Finals in Washington, DC, December 2–6.

Could a group of high school students hold the answers to the great scientific challenges of our time?  Find out this fall when America turns its eye to the young science stars competing in the renowned Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology – the nation’s premier science research competition for high school students.

Admission to this competition is free and the public is welcomed to attend.

Coca-Cola Stuffing 10,000 Care Packages for Soldiers Overseas this Veterans Day

Atlanta, Ga--  Coca-Cola, with help from volunteers and hundreds of their own employees will be packing 10,000 care packages for service members stationed away from home. 

On Tuesday from 9:00am to 2:00pm there will be a "Stuffing Party" in which they will create packages for the USO to send a piece of home to our overseas soldiers.  The 82nd Airborne Division "All-American" Chorus will provide a moving a cappella performance in uniform, during the stuffing party.

In-Store Seminar with The Oprah Magazine, November 6th

As part of the seminar series, IKEA ATLANTA has partnered with O, The Oprah Magazine to share free tips and demonstrations focused on creating positive changes in the home with a Martha Beck Master Life Coach. This event will be held on November 6th, from 2-3p.m.

In this interactive seminar, Martha Beck Master Coach Susan Hyatt will teach how to improve one’s quality of life by making changes to a living space.

Grand Day Out at Park Tavern, November 7th

Come out for a Sunday full of fun and philanthropy at Park Tavern at Piedmont Park. Friends of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta are celebrating their second Annual Grand Day Out, a family benefit concert that donates a portion of it's proceeds to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

This event will begin at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 7th under the big top in the garden tent. Local bands Lunch Money and Always Saturday will perform on the main stage. There will also be carnival games and prizes for children.  

Advance tickets cost $6 for children and $10 for adults. Tickets can be purchased by calling 404-350-9363 or sending by an email to staff@play-2-grow.com.  Adults will be charged $12 at the door and children will be charged $8. Parking is free of charge, on the premises.

The Atlanta BeltLine is Breaking Ground on the Eastside Trail, 10/30 at 10am

Atlanta, GA--  The Atlanta BeltLine is breaking ground on one of the most talked-about developments in Atlanta, the Eastside Trail.  The groundbreaking ceremony will mark the beginning of construction on the 2.5-mile segment of trail running from DeKalb Avenue to 10th Street and Monroe Drive at the tip of Piedmont Park, which is projected to be complete in summer of 2011.

The new Eastside Trail will be a 14-foot wide concrete multi-use trail in the Atlanta BeltLine right-of-way which will connect Piedmont Park, the new Historic Fourth Ward Park which is now under construction, and the Freedom Park trail.

Unveiling of the SWEET Center, October 26th

On October 26, 2010 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., Southface and the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) will host the official unveiling of the Southeast Weatherization and Energy Efficiency Training (SWEET) Center (590 Piedmont Avenue, Atlanta). 

The SWEET Center was funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds. To date, Southface’s SWEET program have trained more than 700 weatherization professionals in home retrofitting and energy-efficiency skills, benefiting over 3,500 low-income households.

The SWEET Center facility has been recognized by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) officials and weatherization programs across the U.S. as a unique example of Atlanta’s national leadership in economic revitalization and green workforce development.
