Volunteer cleanup efforts save thousands for DeKalb County

DECATUR, Ga. -- Keep DeKalb Beautiful volunteers helped save over $4,300 in labor costs for DeKalb County by working the Great American Cleanup. 

A DeKalb official said that some 70 volunteer groups helped this spring to clean more than 400 miles of space in DeKalb's neighborhoods. Together, they worked 197 hours and gathered almost 29,000 pounds of trash.

ATLANTA (June 14, 2013) – Join Chef Ford Fry as he hosts the fifth annual JCT. Kitchen Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival on Sunday, July 21 from 1-5 p.m. This year, more than 40 of the South’s top chefs along with 15 skilled mixologists and over 30 farmers are teaming up to create the tastiest tomato concoctions and to help raise money for Georgia Organics.

“Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival is absolutely one of my favorite events,” says Ford Fry, owner/chef of JCT. Kitchen & Bar, No. 246 and The Optimist. “I love seeing the creativity of all the participants and I’m looking forward to seeing what this year’s crop of talent comes up with,” he adds.

Tickets are now on sale for $55 per person and $50 for Georgia Organics members and can be purchased online through Xorbia. Starting Monday, July 1, all ticket prices will increase to $70 per person. A total of 1,400 tickets are available for attendees. Last year’s festival brought in close to $26,000 for Georgia Organics.

ATLANTA -- 11Alive News employees rolled up their sleeves Wednesday morning and assembled 400 bagged lunches for children in need.

This is the second year 11Alive has helped Action Ministries' Smart Lunch, Smart Kid program.

Smart Lunch, Smart Kid provides nutritious meals in the summertime for children who normally rely on free or reduced-price lunches during the school year.

WellCare and Gas South employees joined the 11Alive team in making sandwiches and putting together lunch bags. Each Smart Lunch, Smart Kid meal consists of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, chips, fruit snacks and a bottle of water.

Action Ministries hopes to feed at least 200,000 children across north Georgia through the 2013 Smart Lunch, Smart Kid outreach.

Supper Club fundraiser held at 5 Seasons Brewery

5 Seasons Brewery invites the community to help them kick off the summer patio season while raising money for the Atlanta Community Food Bank. They will host the Food Bank’s regular Supper Club fundraiser on June 11 at all three locations. This is a special edition of Supper Club with the theme “Patio Perfect Dining” highlighting great restaurant patios in Atlanta.

Eat dinner at one of the three 5 Seasons Brewery locations on Tuesday, June 11 and 20 percent of your tab will be donated to support the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

Riverside Farmers Market opens June 1

The Riverside Farmers Market will open for its fourth season on Saturday, June 1, 2013. The popular market is operated by Fulton County Cooperative Extension.

The market will return to the same location, in the parking lot of Roswell City Hall located at 38 Hill Street. Hours are Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon through September.  The market is open rain or shine.

The 2013 season promises to be the strongest yet for the Riverside Farmers Market, with more than 15 vendors. In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, vendors will provide knife sharpening, honey, baked goods, eco-friendly clothing, as well as live performances by local musicians.

Market visitors can also get free advice from UGA Fulton County Cooperative Extension Agents and Master Gardeners on topics ranging from planting a garden, to radon detection to canning.

Fulton County Cooperative Extension participates in Pizza Farm 2013

How do you expose urban youth to Georgia’s agriculture? You open a Pizza Farm!

The Cooperative Extension Metro Collaborative of Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Cobb and Clayton counties have invited 4th and 5th grade students to visit Pizza Farm 2013 on May 8 and 9, 2013 at the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall located in Forest Park, GA. Attendees will learn how dairy, vegetables, grains and meats come together to make the perfect pizza, as well as about good health and nutrition. 

“We are excited about the Pizza Farm!” states Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension. “Many children think their food comes from the grocery store.  The Pizza Farm will teach them that every pizza starts at the farm.”

Exhibits on the origins of pizza ingredients will be presented in a circuit of stations set up around the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall.
