ATLANTA -- The screams of girls pierced the gymnasium at Harland Boys and Girls Club in Midtown Atlanta as actress Keshia Knight Pulliam paid them a surprise visit.
She walked in and began hugging each one of them.
Her face is one they know.
"I've been acting since before any of ya'll were born and since I was younger than you guys," she told the group.
Beginning at age 4, Knight Pulliam portrayed Rudy Huxtable on "The Cosby Show."
These days, she's on the hit television show "Tyler Perry's House of Payne."
But on this day, she has a new role.
"We're leaving the boys at home," Knight Pulliam told the crowd. "We're just going to talk, you me, the girls. This is girls time right now."
She announced her latest project with a nonprofit group she has created.
"A summer camp, just for girls and it's going to be right down the street at Spelman College on July 23 and 24," she said.
She's calling it Kamp Kizzy and it's free, open to girls 11 to 16 years old. The goal is to empower girls.
"In those teenage years, you definitely are challenged and bombarded by the choice of what's right and what's wrong. What path do I take?" she said. "I think all girls go through it. It is part of growing up, where do you fit in."
Knight Pulliam plans to give girls the tools to feel good about themselves.
"The Alliance Theater has signed on to be a part of the camp so we're going to do some improv, some acting workshops," she said. "We're going to do creative writing."
Plans also call for lessons in etiquette and public speaking.
Knight Pulliam has pulled in major sponsors for the camp that include Zaxbys and global beauty brands African Pride and Parlux Fragrances.
