DEA applauds huge turnout on Drug Take-Back Day

ATLANTA -- Americans participating in the United States Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) second National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day event last weekend turned in more than 376,593 pounds of unwanted or expired medications.

This is 55 percent more than the 242,000 pounds the public brought in during last September's event.

The medications were taken to 5,361 take-back sites in all 50 states.

"The amount of prescription drugs turned in by the American public during the first two take-back events is simply staggering -- 309 tons -- and represents a clear need for a convenient way to rid homes of unwanted or expired prescription drugs," said DEA administrator Michele M. Leonhart.

The Atlanta Community Food Bank Goes Solar

The Atlanta Community Food Bank Goes Solar

System Design and Install by Radiance Solar

The Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB) and Radiance Solar have announced the completion of a state-of-the-art photovoltaic solar array at the Food Bank’s midtown headquarters. The ACFB has distributed food and grocery products to partner nonprofits throughout metro Atlanta and North Georgia for nearly 32 years, and is now poised to be an important partner in the fight against rising energy costs.

The Food Bank’s solar system, Powered by Suniva™, is one of the largest roof-mounted PV arrays in the state of Georgia.  The array consists of over 174 high-powered solar panels manufactured by Norcross-based Suniva. The 42kW solar array is expected to produce 58,000 kWh every year, all of which will be fed back into Georgia Power’s electric-grid as a part of their Green Energy Buyback Program.

Homeowners: Be Green and Save Green This Summer

Homeowners: Be Green and Save Green This Summer

As we head into summer, hard pressed consumers need to save on energy costs while they keep their homes comfortable during hot weather. Here are some simple and effective ways to reduce summer energy bills from the weatherization experts at NRGSVRS (www.nrgsvrs.com):

1. Seal the deal. Inspect the areas around your doors, between the crown molding and ceiling, inside closets and at the seams around your floors. If you see light coming from the outside or feel any air seeping through these areas, it is time for sealing those drafts! Weather stripping and caulking or using spray foam (be careful: it expands) can significantly cut down on wasted, cooled air in your home!

2. Bring out the blankets. It’s summer, so do we need blankets? We are talking about blankets of insulation!

DASANI Celebrated its New PlantBottle® Packaging by Giving Back to Local Eco-Samaritans

The first 100 percent recyclable beverage packages made with plants were made readily available on April 4, 2011 to people across the U.S. To recognize the little things people do to live more sustainably, a DASANI Blue Crew attended two big events in Atlanta on April 16 and April 17 and thanked residents for partaking in eco-friendly activities. The local effort helped to celebrate the national launch of DASANI PlantBottle® packaging – a 100 percent recyclable bottle made of up to 30 percent plants.

More than 1,000 Atlanta residents were “caught,” by the DASANI Blue Crew, being environmental do-gooders.
