Spring is just around the corner! Get a jump-start on your outdoor living plans Saturday, March 12, from 11 a.m.-noon. Eric King, ASLA, owner of King Landscaping, and Rick Goldstein, a registered architect and co-owner of MOSAIC Group [Architects and Remodelers], will share decades of experience creating inviting outdoor living spaces.

"Easy Hardscaping" is a free crash course that will showcase the best (and worst) ideas in building patios, walks and walls for your home landscape. It will be held at the MOSAIC office, located at 2358 Perimeter Park Drive, Suite 300.

Let’s Move Meetup at Piedmont Park

Let’s Move Meetup at Piedmont Park will provide an opportunity for families to learn about healthy eating and ways to get active in the park and at home.

This free program will involve physical fitness activities for all ages led by Love You Healthy Fitness and the Queen of Hearts Foundation Cardio Kids Club as well as demonstrations on healthy eating with Megan McCarthy of Healthy Eating 101.

Piedmont Park’s sports fields, playgrounds, pool, fountain, trails and green spaces are all great places for physical activity. In the winter the weather has many of us staying indoors more and moving less, so come out to kick start your physical fitness.

Via the Department of Watershed Management -- The Department of Watershed Management reminds its customers that irrigation systems should be shut down when the temperatures drop below freezing to prevent overspray from freezing on sidewalks and streets and causing accidents/injuries. Irrigation systems installed after 2007 must by law have rain sensors that shut the system down when it is raining or when temperatures fall below 32 degrees F.

East Decatur Station Unveils State’s Most Advanced Photovoltaic Commercial Rooftop System

As East Decatur Station (EDS) carves out a unique live/work/play community in Decatur, its creators, Jack Honderd, Pat Murphy, and Chuck Bosserman, took an exciting step toward sustainability and installed a 147 kW photovoltaic (PV) system, one of the largest commercial rooftop systems in metro Atlanta and Georgia.  

Made up of three different arrays, the system produces 198,134 kWh of energy a year and will help offset the electricity load. Though the increased presence of renewable energy is inevitable, the creators of EDS take the steps to reduce their environmental impact today not tomorrow. 

The Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) provided East Decatur Station with a rebate for the photovoltaic installation through the Clean Energy Property Rebate Program.

Largest Solar Array in Atlanta History, Unveiled

Hannah Solar has completed the largest solar array on any office building in Atlanta's history. The Property Group’s ten-story Peachtree 25th Building located at 1720 Peachtree Street, the two companies have equipped the first multi-tenant building in the city with a solar plant.

The project is a joint venture that also includes the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA), the U.S. Department of Energy, Georgia Power, the Public Service Commission and solar panel manufacturer, Schüco-USA.

A commissioning ceremony will be held on the roof of the building at noon on Tuesday, December 21st to coincide with the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year.

The solar array consists of 684 Schüco 225-watt solar modules, two ‘PV Power’ inverters and a custom engineered mounting system for securing the arrays to the roof.

Christmas Kick-Off Event at Pike Nursery, November 27th

On November 27, from 7:00 – 10:00 a.m., Pike Nurseries will host their Christmas Kick-Off Event, which boasts hot apple cider and appetizers from Proof of the Pudding for guests to savor while selecting the perfect Christmas tree. During this time, they are offering guests 10% off of their entire purchase and another 10% of each purchase will be donated to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Following the Christmas Kick-Off event, Pike Nurseries will host two Williamsburg Wreath Decorating Workshops on November 27 at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., where Pike Nurseries instructors will help attendees create their own personal wreath for the holidays. 

The $30 supply fee provides participants with a fresh evergreen wreath, fruits, nuts and berries with which to create a beautiful and lush wreath inspired by Christmas in historic Williamsburg.

Unveiling of the SWEET Center, October 26th

On October 26, 2010 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., Southface and the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) will host the official unveiling of the Southeast Weatherization and Energy Efficiency Training (SWEET) Center (590 Piedmont Avenue, Atlanta). 

The SWEET Center was funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds. To date, Southface’s SWEET program have trained more than 700 weatherization professionals in home retrofitting and energy-efficiency skills, benefiting over 3,500 low-income households.

The SWEET Center facility has been recognized by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) officials and weatherization programs across the U.S. as a unique example of Atlanta’s national leadership in economic revitalization and green workforce development.
