WEEKEND EVENTS: Atlanta Football Classic, Chili Cookoff and Music Midtown | Events
ATLANTA – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.
Check out Jenny Owen Youngs at Unplugged in the Park. Park Tavern, 99X, Miller Lite and Bacardi have all come together to get music fans “up close and personal” with a number of today’s best singer-songwriters as we present the 2011 Unplugged in the Park Music series. Featured performers, included: Sonia Leigh, Alice Peacock, Angie Aparo and Matthew Perryman Jones to Unplugged newcomers like Griffin House, Ingram Hill, and Carbon Leaf, to up and coming locals Connor Christian & Southern Gothic, Blair Crimmins & The Hookers and The Whiskey Gentry. The concert will be held at Park Tavern; which is located at 500 10th Street NE in Atlanta.
On Sunday afternoon, the PAWS in the Park Dog Walk and Pet Expo will be held on Centennial Park. The expo features canine demonstrations, vendors and entertainment. Registration for the expo is currently open. Atlanta Pet Rescue (APRA) will donate every dollar of pledge money raised goes directly to the animals at Atlanta Pet Rescue & Adoption. APRA is a nonprofit, volunteer-based, no-kill shelter dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and adopting homeless dogs and cats into loving homes. Centennial Park is located 265 Park Avenue West in Atlanta.
West Coast rapper, Too Short, is hosting a concert at Center Stage on Saturday night. He began his career in the early 1980’s and is credited with starting the genre of “West Coast gangster rap”. Tickets will be available at Ticketmaster and online. Center Stage is located at 1374 W. Peachtree Street in Atlanta.
The 4th Annual Fiesta Georgia will be held on September 25th, 2011 at the Georgia International Horse Park. Fiesta Georgia is the state’s Hispanic Heritage Month kick-off celebration. Fiesta Georgia is a day-long celebration of Latino culture, featuring continuous live musical performances on two stages by national and local recording artists, sponsor displays with free product samples, arts and crafts and authentic food from several Latin-American countries. The Georgia International Horse Park is located at 1996 Centennial Olympic Parkway in Conyers.
Bring out your top coats and crinoline skirts and make your way to Stately Oaks in Jonesboro for the 75th Anniversary of Gone with the Wind. The event features “food, tea, games, door prizes and surprises”. Seating reservations are required and they are $15.00 per person. Stately Oaks is located at 100 Carriage Lane in Jonesboro.
Saturday, the American Diabetes Association is holding their Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes. The Step Out Walk is a “day of energy, hug, support and shameless dedication to fighting a serious health problem”. The event includes a 5K, a walk, family fun, and an Interactive Health and Wellness Festival. The walk will start at Grant Park, which is located at 800 Cherokee Avenue in Atlanta.
The Atlanta Classic’s Parade of Excellence will be held on Saturday morning starting at 10:00 a.m. The classic is held to honor special achievements by the best and the brightest of our middle and high school students and give students an opportunity to celebrate their individual and collective efforts across all aspects of their education. The parade takes place on Peachtree Street at Ralph McGill Boulevard, south to Marietta Street; turn west and end at Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Marietta Street.
This Saturday, at Piedmont Park, Music Midtown will return to the Meadow at Piedmont Park. The annual festival will host the best ensemble of talent on two stages featuring Coldplay, The Black Keys, Cage the Elephant, Manchester Orchestra, Young The Giant, Band of Skulls, Joy Formidable, The Constellations, Mona and The Postelles. This year, a portion of the proceeds from Music Midtown 2011 will go toward funding recreation centers and after-school activities for young people in the city as part of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed’s Centers of Hope initiative. Tickets are available on Ticketmaster. Piedmont Park is located at Monroe Drive and 10th Street.
The Duluth Fall Festival is one of the most successful festivals in the state with an estimated 40,000 visitors. This two-day event, which is held at the Duluth Town Green and Amphitheater, includes more than 350 arts & crafts and food vendors, live music and entertainment, a silent auction, a man’s corner, a parade (Saturday morning), a 5K road race (Sunday morning), and a carnival (Wednesday-Sunday.) Free shuttles run throughout the weekend providing the convenience of offsite parking, so bring the whole family. The town center is located at 3142 Hill Street in Duluth.
The 32nd Annual Great Miller Lite Chili Cook-Off will be held in Stone Mountain, Ga., where more than 300 culinary teams will battle for chili bragging rights. Guests of all ages are invited to enjoy live music and games, and 100% of the proceeds will benefit Camp Twin Lakes, a network of camps providing life-changing experiences to thousands of Georgia children. According to their website, the Bank of America Atlanta Football Classic presented by 100 Black Men of Atlanta is one of the nation's largest Black college football games pitting long-time rivals Florida A&M University against Southern University on the gridiron. The event is also 100 Black Men of Atlanta's largest fundraiser for its mentoring, academic support and scholarship program, Project Success. But the Classic is far more than just a game between two fine Black colleges. It's an HBCU and an Atlanta tradition! The game takes place at the Georgia Dome on Saturday, September 24, 2011 with kickoff at 3:30pm.
