Culinary Matrimony kicks off Taste of Atlanta

ATLANTA -– Here comes the bride…now open wide! To help food lovers say “I do” to the smorgasbord of flavors and fun offered at the 13th annual Taste of Atlanta, the festival is hosting a celebratory kickoff party on Friday, October 24 in Midtown at Tech Square.

The event, themed Culinary Matrimony, will unite unlikely, yet harmonious parings, as local celebrity chefs lift the veil to match-made-in-heaven recipes, libations and more. Keeping with tradition, this Friday night festival kickoff is an all-inclusive block party with exclusive bites from select restaurants, bountiful booze and live music from 80s Synth Pop band Electric Avenue.

All About Developmental Disabilities offers workshops on dating, employment

DECATUR, Ga. -- All About Developmental Disabilities (AADD) will host workshops for families living with developmental disabilities at two locations this fall. Through their Family Support Center, designed to serve individuals and families living with developmental disabilities in metro Atlanta and across Georgia, AADD offers assistance during various life transitions.

Each workshop will help participants learn more about a specific issue, including dating, employment and planning for future needs. Tuesday workshops will be held at AADD’s Family Support Center in Decatur at 125 Clairemont Ave, Suite 300, Decatur, 30030. Thursday workshops will be held at the Marcus Jewish Community Center, 5342 Tilly Mill Rd, Atlanta, 30338.

Black Gay Pride returns to Atlanta

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Black Gay Pride, the country's leading LGBTQ annual pride celebration, is gearing up for their annual celebration during the 2014 Labor Day holiday weekend.

The festival, which runs Aug. 28 through Sept. 1, will feature special guest performances from Faith Evans, Tamar Braxton and Sevyn Streeter. The Georgian Terrace and Loews Hotel in Downtown Atlanta are the official host hotels for pride weekend.

This year, the festival will honor Grammy Award-winning songstress Faith Evans. Evans will receive the 2014 Humanitarian Award and will perform live on the main stage.

The five-day holiday weekend will also feature the third annual Pure Heat Community Festival, which takes place on Sunday, Aug. 31 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Piedmont Park. The cultural event will highlight market and food vendors, live performances, entertainment, educational forums, prizes and giveaways, all of which bring together the spirit of community, pride and vision.

Taste of Atlanta announces 2014 restaurant lineup

ATLANTA –- More than 90 of Atlanta’s most notable and on-the-rise restaurants have signed on to participate in this year’s Taste of Atlanta, which will take place October 24-26 in Midtown at Tech Square.

With eateries featured from both inside and outside the Perimeter, festival-goers will be able to savor truly authentic flavors that represent every corner of the city.

New this year, to help attendees pinpoint their local favorites or discover new dining treasures during Taste of Atlanta, the festival will take food lovers on a culinary tour through the city’s many diverse neighborhoods.

Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmers Market ends season Aug. 27

FULTON COUNTY, ga. -- On Wednesday, August 27 at 10 a.m., Fulton County Cooperative Extension will celebrate the successful fourth season of the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market. This year, the program provided approximately 31.5 tons of fresh produce to more than 6,900 residents in 24 Fulton County communities.

The celebration will take place at Berean seventh Day Adventist Church located at 291 Hamilton E. Holmes Drive, Atlanta and is open to all Fulton County residents.

The closing ceremony will include comments from Chairman John Eaves, Fulton County Board of Commissioners and Valeria Pickard, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Fulton Fresh was founded in 2011 as part of Fulton County’s continuous effort to address health disparities. Communities served by the seasonal program benefit from the delivery of fresh produce, nutrition education and were taught how to prepare tasty, healthy meals with the produce they received.

All About Developmental Disabilities to hold workshop series on sexuality

DECATUR, Ga. -- This fall, All About Developmental Disabilities (AADD) will host a four-part workshop series on sexuality and developmental disabilities. Parents and adults with developmental disabilities will learn about sexuality, how parents can support their child’s sexual behavior and romantic relationships, and how to handle sex on the Internet and in other media.

The sessions will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 26, Sept. 23, Oct. 21 and Nov. 18. All sessions will be held at AADD’s Family Support Center, 125 Clairemont Avenue Suite 300, Decatur. The cost is $10 per session.

Workforce Investment Act Board Task Force meeting scheduled for Monday

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The Fulton County Workforce Preparation and Employment System – Workforce Investment Act Board (FCWPES-WIA) Board Development, Visibility and Influence Committee Task Force will meet on Monday, August 18 at 2 p.m. in the Adamsville Regional Health Center on the second floor.

The Adamsville Regional Health Center is located at 3700 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Atlanta.

The FCWPES-WIA Board oversees activities related to providing an environment that supports a skilled and trained workforce and creating innovative programs that serve the changing needs of employers and the business community.

WIA helps Georgia move toward a comprehensive, customer-focused workforce investment system where Job Seeker and Employer customers alike can access a wide range of workforce-related tools and information needed to manage their work activities. Services are provided through a network of One-Stop Centers statewide.
