STONE MOUNTAIN | Woman celebrates 104th birthday
News

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Surrounded by a daughter, six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 26 great-great-grandchildren, Willie May Hardy celebrated her 104th birthday.

"I feel fine, thanks to the good Lord who gives me strength and has blessed me to get this old," Hardy laughed.

She was born in 1908, the same year the first Ford Model T was rolled out. She grew up in rural south Georgia and said from an early age she wasn't afraid of hard work.

"I'd chop cotton. I'd hoe cotton. I'd pick cotton. Anything I could do in a field I did it to help out," Hardy said. "If someone called in sick, I could even pick up the plow and get the mule going."

Her family and church members will tell you her skills in the kitchen are what she's known for. Once she moved to Atlanta, Hardy married and became a beloved member of Butler Street Baptist Church, where she hosted weekly Sunday dinners for dozens of people.  She is the oldest member of the congregation.

As for how she feels about turning 104, she said she was pleased with the big turnout for her celebration, but admitted she's got a bigger number as her goal now.

"My grandmother, when she passed, was 105.  She could see. She could talk. She could still get around without a wheelchair," Hardy said.

Since Hardy can do all of that and still vigoursly blow out her birthday candles, we're pretty sure we'll be visiting her next year at her birthday party.
