Rain-soaked trees tumble after storms | News

ATLANTA -- Georgia Power crews restored service to Ansley Park in Midtown Atlanta after a huge oak tree brought down a power pole and lines Thursday.

Chainsaws were buzzing through the night on Maddox Drive at Barksdale Drive.

The tree fell at around 10 p.m. but did not hit any cars or homes. Neighbors said the winds were calm and skies were clear at the time after a week of stormy weather.

In Stone Mountain, a big oak fell on the home of Roger Jackson and his family.

"I heard what sounded like thunder," Jackson said. "The house was shaking. I thought it was an earthquake. Then I looked outside and saw this big old tree laying across the house."

The family's minivan was also caught under the oak.

Jackson said the tree fell around noon on Thursday. He said there were no storms in the area at the time but, figured the roots were rain-soaked.
