Fulton County to host session to teach seniors how to guard against scams

Fulton County is hosting another information session to help seniors to avoid scams.  The session will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Auburn Senior Center located at 300 Edgewood Avenue in Atlanta.  The Fulton County Housing and Human Services Department, Office of Housing and Community Development sponsors the program.

Scams that often target seniors include but are not limited to telemarketing, reverse mortgages, healthcare/health insurance, home and auto repair.  This session will provide information to help seniors to identify, prevent and report fraudulent and deceptive schemes.

11Alive visits Centennial Olympic Park

ATLANTA -- The 11Alive News Today morning show continued its summer "This is Home" tour with a visit to Centennial Olympic Park in Downtown Atlanta.

Several colorful characters greeted Karyn Greer, Chesley McNeil and John "Commuter Dude" Gerard at the park, including Atlanta Braves mascot Homer, and the Atlanta Hawks cheerleaders and mascot.

Downtown Atlanta is home to a number of attractions, including the World of Coca-Cola, Georgia Aquarium and CNN Center. Zoo Atlanta, the Center for Puppetry Arts and Fernbank Museum of Natural History aren't too far away.

UGA Men tied for fourth after first round in NCAA play

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Led by freshman Lee McCoy, the 15th-ranked Georgia men's golf team opened the NCAA's Tempe Regional with an even-par 280 on Thursday at the ASU Karsten Golf Course.

The Bulldogs and five other teams are tied for fourth place at 280, 12 shots behind third-ranked UCLA. Following 54 holes of competition, the top five teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 28 - June 2 at the Capital City Club's Crabapple Course in Alpharetta. The Bulldogs are only two strokes out of second place heading into Friday's round.

McCoy paced the Bulldogs on Thursday as he signed for a 2-under 68. McCoy is sixth individually, four shots behind UCLA's Pontus Widegren and Austin Peay's Dustin Korte. Senior T.J. Mitchell followed at 1-under 69, while junior Joey Garber had an even-par 70, and junior Keith Mitchell and sophomore Nicholas Reach each posted 3-over 73s.

Tech men tied for fourth after NCAA regionals opening round

TALLAHASSEE -- Anders Albertson continued his recent hot streak by firing a 6-under-par 66, lifting Georgia Tech into a tie for fourth place after the opening round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional golf tournament. 

In near perfect weather conditions Thursday at the 6,965-yard, par 72 Golden Eagle Golf and Country Club, Albertson turned in a bogey-free card and stands one shot off the pace set by MJ Maguire of North Florida (65). The Atlantic Coast Conference individual champion has broken 70 in seven of his last eight rounds.

Tech's Andrews, White advance in U.S. Open Qualifying

THE FLATS -- Georgia Tech junior Bo Andrews and 2012 graduate James White both advanced out of U.S. Open local qualifiers in the Atlanta area on Monday, and will play in a sectional qualifier in early June for a chance at playing in the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

Andrews, a Raleigh, N.C., native who will open play along with his teammates in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional on Thursday, shot a 1-under-par 69 at Marietta Country Club to tie for second place and join a group of eight players who qualified out of a field of 130 players. Sophomore teammates Anders Albertson and Ollie Schniederjans each shot 71 to tie for 11th, one shot out of a playoff for the final qualifying spots.

Junior Seth Reeves (73), sophomore Drew Czuchry (74) and freshman Michael Hines (81) also played in the qualifier Monday.
