Peachtree Road Race T-Shirt Design Contest Deadline is March 1st

Atlanta, GA--  Artists that have ideas for the t-shirts to this year's Peachtree Road Race, only have a few more days to submit their designs.  March 1st is the official deadline for all entries into the 2011 AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt Design Contest.

A panel of judges will narrow the field down to 5 finalists, which will have their designs revealed to the public on March 15th. (the same day that the online registration opens up for the race)  At that point, the public will have until April 30 to vote for their favorite T-shirt design and pick the lucky winner.

The winner is revealed on the 2011 Race Day and receives $1000, while the other 4 finalists receive $100.

POINT 3 Basketball Skills Challenge, January 15th

POINT 3 Basketball, a new performance apparel company based in Atlanta is holding its inaugural Skills Challenge with all proceeds benefiting Atlanta Youth Basketball. The challenge will be held in front of the famed store front, Walter's Clothing who will be the first retail carrier of the POINT 3 line from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.

This event will benefit the Atlanta Select AAU team and Team Forest of James Forrest, the legendary Georiga Tech Yellow Jacket. Admission to the Skills Clinic is $1 and all participants will be given a POINT 3 balance bracelet. During the skills challenge, participants will compete to see who can dribble, pass and shoot. The fastest contestant will win a $100 gift card to Walters and a $250 Point 3 Apparel.

Walters is located at 66 Decatur Street Southeast in Atlanta.

MUST Ministries Gobble Jog to be held Thanksgiving Day

Register today for the Gobble Jog, a Thanksgiving Day event featuring a 10K run/walk, 5K, a 1K, and the Tot Trot (for kids 5 and under) benefitting MUST Ministries. The G.J. is certified as a qualifier for seeding in the Peachtree Road Race and the US 10K Classic. Rain or shine event!

With the funds raised, MUST Ministries is able to continue its efforts to help pave the way to a better way of life for many by offering programs that feed, clothe, shelter and teach.

New Director of Athletics for Atlanta Public Schools

Jeff Beggs was recently named the new Director of Athletics for the APS school district. He will be responsible for leadership of the interscholastic sports program, sports training and aiding in healthy competition throughout all grade levels.

Beggs has an extensive 31-year background as a system-level athletic director, a high school athletic director, head coach, assistant principal and teacher for a number of schools and school districts in the state.  Also, he currently serves as president of the Georgia Athletic Directors Association (GADA), where he is also a member of the GADA Board of Directors.

SCAD Atlanta announces Membership in the NAIA

Atlanta, Ga. - The Savannah College of Art and Design is proud to announce it has been accepted into the membership of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). SCAD Atlanta joins the 291 other member colleges and universities that compete in the NAIA – a consortium that promotes competitive athletics, academic excellence and character values simultaneously.

World Cup In Atlanta? Maybe.

Atlanta, GA – Mayor Kasim Reed and a delegation of sports enthusiasts and community leaders gathered with international and national soccer officials in New York City on Monday to support the United States’ bid to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cup. The group was also there to promote Atlanta as one of the potential 18 host cities.  Joining the Mayor in New York were Gary Stokan, Atlanta World Cup organizing committee chairman, Frank Poe, Georgia World Congress Center executive director and Rich McKay, Atlanta Falcons president. 

The U.S. Bid Committee hosted a reception in New York City to welcome the FIFA Inspection Delegation to the United States.  FIFA, the world soccer federation, visited New York City to examine America’s bid to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.  The United States is among 10 nations bidding for the World Cup.  The announcement is expected to come on Dec. 2, 2010.  If the U.S.
