ATLANTA – Matt Coggin opened D.B.A BBQ or Doing Business As Barbecue in the Virginia Highland neighborhood 2009. According to Lee Coggin, Matt’s mother, he had been talking about opening a restaurant for “a long time”. While opening the restaurant, Matt worried about the economy and his lack of casual dining experience; he also worried about opening a restaurant during a recession but business has been steady over the past two years. 

Previously, Matt worked at Sala, Wisteria and a couple of other Atlanta area fine dining restaurants however he figured that his restaurant should serve BBQ because according to Lee, “Everyone loves BBQ”.

Matt and Lee, along with a culinary team member named Ms. Beth, created the menu from scratch. According to Lee, most recipes are family recipes or they’ve been submitted by employees. The menu is still shaping up and the restaurant is attempting to make the menu more solid with more signature items.

“Our best side is the creamed corn”, Lee told us. The creamed corn is a recipe submitted by Ms. Beth. “Matt wanted to menu to be very southern and most of the people who work here are from the south”. However, the Coggins aren’t originally from Atlanta, they moved here from Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The restaurant smokes their meats using a homemade, in-house rub; they offer three types of barbecue sauce: DBA Sweethouse BBQ, which is a Kansas City style sauce; Bryan’s Tangy BBQ Sauce, which was created by one of their waiters; and the Carolina Spicy Vinegar Sauce, which is a vinegar, based spicy sauce.  

DBA’s signature burger is served with pimento cheese, bacon, fried onions and Cole Slaw and every meal is served with a White Cheese Corn Muffin. Popular menu items include pulled pork, spare ribs and brisket; they’ve also started incorporating nachos and smoked chicken wings on their menu due to football season.

The restaurant features $3 Miller Light beers on Sunday nights, $1 pints and $4 pitchers of Miller HighLife on Monday nights and buffet style Rib Tips, pulled pork and chicken on Tuesday nights.

The manager on duty suggests the ½ back of Spare Ribs with creamed corn and asparagus. She says she chose this meal because the spare ribs are a signature and the creamed corn is their most requested side. This meal costs about $14.00

She also recommends the White Cheddar Corn Muffin Bread Pudding which is served al a mode. The corn muffins are served with every meal and are a pretty big hit, so when the restaurant's sous chef, Ms. Beth, decided to create their bread pudding dessert she figured crafting it with the restaurants White Cheddar Corn Muffins would make it even better. The bread pudding costs $4.00

“We like to finish it off with an iced tea”, said the manager. Their iced tea is freshly brewed daily. It costs about $2.00
