Photo Gallery | Breast Cancer survivor wins special makeover at Prive Salon in Midtown

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month Prive' Salon in conjunction with Susan G. Komen awarded Margaret Hills of Marietta, GA, a breast cancer survivor with a "Day of Beauty."

Prive hair stylist Rachel Dotson  personally knew of the esteem issues women who are battling/surviving cancer deal with after her friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. After watching her friend's hair fall out and watching what chemo therapy & radiation did to her self esteem, she decided to asked the owner if they could contribute to breast cancer a little different this year. Rachel wanted to make a difference with making a woman feel like how a woman is suppose to feel simply beautiful.  Angel Spry, the owner of Prive' agreed asked other in the salon to donate their services to the winner.

Prive' asked for letters to be submitted from their customers to nominate a survivor or a woman who was currently battling breast cancer.  One story in particular submitted by Sara Anne about her “Aunt Margaret” won the hearts of everyone in the Salon. Angel said, “If I had to go through what she went through I do not know how I could have such a positive outlook on life.”  In April 2009 after doing a routine check of her breast in the shower, she felt a lump in her breast that caused concern but she had a dermatologist appointment later that day so she would bring it up to her doctor then.  The dermatologist sent out downstairs to a general surgery, had a biopsy and in May 2009 she had a lumpectomy.  She thought all was well but do to her family history of women on her father’s side dying from this disease, her mother urged her to get tested for the BRCA gene.  Margaret said “At first I was hesitant, but realized what my alternative would be and I decided to get tested.” Margaret learned that she tested not only positive for this gene that causes mutation and an extremely high risk (87%) for not only breast cancer but ovarian cancer.  Her doctor advised her to have a double mastectomy and to have her ovaries removed.  She went forward to have her ovaries and tubes removed but was extremely hesitant once again about the breast surgery.  She found FORCE, an online site that Margaret advised “saved my life, my boobies, and my self esteem” She opted for a DIEP where they replaced her breast with abdominal fat, skin and blood vessels. This procedure brought her risk to less than 5%.

After receiving her gift Margaret said “I just want to say thank you to everyone involved to make this day so special for me, especially Prive', Rachel and of course my niece Sara Anne.

”Prive' has an employee by the name of Leah who is also a breast cancer survivor who is an active advocate for making sure young woman get tested.
