THROWBACK | 40th anniversary of Save the Fox

ATLANTA -- Forty years ago, Atlanta almost lost one of its most iconic landmarks. The story of what saved the Fox Theatre is a reminder of what remains our city's strongest assets: advocacy, generosity, determination.

Today, the historic Fox's 4,665 seat theatre hosts 250 performances a year, attracting 500,000 visitors every year.

Fun Fox Facts you probably didn't know:

  • When King Tut's tomb was discovered in 1922, it launched a worldwide fascination with Egyptian decor. You can see those results mixed with the Moorish decor throughout the Fox.
  • The "sky" at the Fox is made of a vaulted ceiling painted a color called ultramarine blue, and fixed with 11-watt bulbs above three-inch crystals. The clouds are produced with a projector.
  • The Fox was one of the earliest air conditioned buildings in the country, even before the White House.
